What is Confirmation?

Confirmation is the final sacrament of initiation. This sacrament deepens the gifts received in Baptism and seals us with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. St. Thomas Aquinas offers a Confirmation Class to prepare teens for the sacrament using the Purpose Program. Prior to Confirmation, we have faith formation programs to help teens grow in their faith before taking their final steps to being Confirmed. These programs are also available after receiving the sacrament of Confirmation to help teens continue their journey to learn and grow as a disciple. Please see the prerequisites and information below or contact our Youth Minister for more information. Teens older than the minimum requirement and still in high school may also participate in this Confirmation program.

FAQ

Do Catholic High School students need to attend Confirmation classes?
Yes. The Archdiocese of Atlanta gives responsibility for sacramental preparation to the parish, so Catholic schools do not specifically prepare their students for Confirmation. Specific Confirmation classes and events are required for all students, regardless of the public or private high school they currently attend. The required classes and events for Catholic school students are marked on the calendar.

Older Students:  Confirmation is typically received in 10th grade, but any teen up to the age of 18 AND in High School can participate in this program and receive Confirmation. Current 10th and 11th-grade students are welcome to register!

When can my child start Confirmation prep? The guidelines of the Archdiocese of Atlanta state that the requirements for receiving the sacrament of Confirmation are two years of catechesis and faith formation and an age requirement of 16 years old (or in 10th grade). In order to meet these requirements, our two-year Confirmation program starts in 9th grade. Teens in 8th grade or below are encouraged to participate in our other faith formation programs, but they must be in at least 9th grade to start attending our Confirmation classes.

When can my child be Confirmed? Following the guidelines of Archdiocese of Atlanta, your child can receive the sacrament of Confirmation once they have completed the required preparation and are at least the required age. If they are 16 years old or in 10th grade, but they have not been in any faith formation for over a year, they will be required to complete two years of our Confirmation class.
